Training Options

As a breeder, hunter, and trainer, I have learned that a gundog is capable of following instructions. When a training contract is completed the training methods are reviewed with the dog’s owner so you can continue the efforts.

Training contracts are based on the principles of George Hickox Training for Pointing Dogs. The fundamentals of the program are to meet beginning and advanced training requirements, while striving to achieve your desired goals. Your gundog will be introduced to basic obedience, yard training, field training including birds and guns, bird launchers, barrel training method, holding point (steady to wing), electronic collar training, and hunting in gun range.

Basic Obedience training includes commands for come, sit, stay, heel, and kennel. Heel training will allow you to go to the field without the use of a lead.

E-collar training offers the ability to keep control in the field during the hunt. Once the dog is trained you should need no more than the e-collar nick setting to provide corrective action.

TURKEY CREEK KENNELS GUNDOG TRAINING SERVICES

Turkey Creek Kennels has over 50-years of experience in breeding and training Gundogs. Our passion is to help dog owners by developing a professionally trained dog then teaching the owner how to continue the training while understanding canine behavior.

We strive to design programs that achieve the dog owner’s desired goals while providing the fundamentals for beginning and advanced training. During the training process we work closely with the dog and the owner. After each stage of training a thorough explanation is provided to the owner of the process. Pictures and videos are supplied along with in-field examples. We cover the development of the dog for steady to wing and shot, backing when hunting with other dogs, field commands, how to keep control of a hunt, retrieving, and e-collar usage. We will also address and aid you with reinforcement training should problems occur.

Consistent performance in response to your commands should be one of your goals. A well-trained dog should respond to your single command. Say the command then make the dog comply.

The kennel does not take on more than can be successfully managed. You will not arrive to see a multitude of dogs in training at one time. As a rule, I train one dog at a time.

We offer three levels of training packages beginning with Basic Obedience. You can select from a single training package or all three. Please feel free to call me should you wish to discuss these packages. My mobile is 574-453-7208.

The Level I contract is for Basic Obedience. In Basic Obedience the dog is trained to commands for Come, Sit, Stay, Hold, Heel, and Kennel.  This video shows the results when the "kennel" command has been given. Notice how the entire kennel of dogs responds to the command.
